KAOLINITE GROUP. The kaolinite group includes the dioctedral minerals kaolinite, dickite, nacrite, and halloysite, and the ctedral minerals antigorite, chamosite, chrysotile, and cronstedite. The primary structural unit of this group is a layer composed of one octedral sheet condensed with one tetredral sheet.
The 1:1 layer minerals contain one tetredral and one octedral sheet in their basic structural unit (Fig. 2.) This twosheet mineral type is represented by the kaolin group, with the general formula Al2Si205(0H)4. Kaolinite, the most common mineral in this group, is dioctedral, exhibiting Al3+ octedral and Si4+ tetredral coordination.
